Which car has the biggest boot?+
By usable floor area — depth × width between the wheel arches, which is what actually limits a large flat object — the Subaru Outback leads our table at 107 × 106 cm. Sorting by litres gives a different winner, which is exactly the problem with litres.
Why not just compare litres?+
Because volume ignores shape. A boot with 500 litres spread over a long flat floor takes a folded pushchair or a flat-pack that a 500-litre boot shaped like a tall box will not. Sort this table by depth or width and the order changes completely.
What is "width between the arches"?+
The narrowest point of the boot floor, between the two humps covering the rear wheels. It is the dimension that stops most objects, and almost no manufacturer publishes it.
